GENERAL INFORMATION
I am a Counselling Psychologist, registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. I have been in private practice since 1996, working from home rooms as well as consulting at Netcare Garden City Hospital. Currently I consult from rooms in Parkwood (bordering Rosebank, Saxonwold, Parkview, Parktown North, Oaklands), and from my home rooms in Westdene, Johannesburg.
I am fluent in Afrikaans and English, and work with adult individuals and couples, along the whole range of gender, sexual orientation, cultural and social spectrum. I work within a trauma-informed point of view, and have over the years developed a special interest in body-centered, mindfulness-based therapy, within the bigger context of existential and humanistic psychology, incorporating attachment theory as an important way of understanding behaviour.
I offer therapy and counselling for those who are suffering psychological distress, such as having been traumatised, are experiencing relationship difficulties, have work related issues, suffer with anxiety and mood disorders, and have any other emotional issue/s which have an impact on wellbeing.
In June 2015 I completed an externship with Dr Sue Johnson and Gail Palmer in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy in Toronto, and I work with couples informed by this approach.
I also offer life coaching, based on training with Neuroleadership Group SA, with roots in neurophysiology and mindfulness theory.
I do not do assessments and forensic work, nor do I see children under the age of 16, except in the context of family therapy or family trauma debriefing.
I do brief interventions (usually around 6 to 10 sessions) as well as longer term, depth psychotherapy for working through long-standing psychological issues. Although short term interventions can help an individual process and work through a specific issue such as a traumatic incident, longer term therapy is often recommended, as the healing which happens may be deeper and longer lasting. It also takes a little time to settle in to therapy, so I recommend that you make a commitment to stay for at least 6 sessions in order to benefit from the treatment.
As you may know, as a psychologist I do not prescribe, but will refer you to a psychiatrist should medication seem relevant such as for mood and anxiety disorders.
A PERSONAL NOTE.
I am deeply interested in how we make sense of what life gives us, and how we develop and mature into being wholly responsible for our own development and well-being. I am completely committed to bringing everything that I have learnt (academically and from clinical experience) to the therapy room and create with my patient a safe, nurturing space where an encounter with the Self can happen, and suffering can be alleviated sufficiently to allow for resilience in response to unavoidable life stressors.
I believe that therapy has, at its core, the aim of reducing suffering, emotional as well as sometimes physical, since our psyches are embodied and what we experience emotionally will impact our sense of physical wellbeing and vice versa.
In therapy we can learn to understand and accept ourselves, and free ourselves up from old patterns of responding to our world which often create unnecessary suffering.
So, psychotherapy is not only about symptomatic relief of a set of clinical syndromes, but also about long lasting changes in the way we relate to ourselves and the world, improving an inner sense of wellbeing which in turn enables us to have rich and fulfilling life experiences and satisfying relationships.
“The purpose of therapy is to help the client acknowledge, experience, and bear reality”
